The right to vote in free and fair elections is a fundamental right of Filipinos that was denied during the 14 years of the Marcos dictatorship. In 1986, Ferdinand Marcos Sr. called for a presidential election in response to the tremendous popular clamor for democracy and social justice.
Among the citizenry, the question was: should we participate and hope that meaningful change can be brought about by peaceful means? Or should we boycott the election because the process is controlled and enforced by the dictatorship?
A good number who supported this electoral struggle gave their lives for it. Here are eight of our election heroes, most of them little-known.
